Standardized Assessment & Accommodations

Educational Testing Services and other standardized test makers are the first to inform educators that their tests never meant as the sole diagnostic tool for an individual student. They are meant to indicate trends and patterns for a school or district , and to be included as one of many sources of information about a student. – Wormeli 2006

Teacher who may be administering tests should make sure that the accommodations reflect the instructional modification offered English language learners in general education classrooms and have been researchers on this student population. the most common accommodations for English language learners used by states in large scale assessment include the following:

  • Extended testing time
  • Small-group administration
  • individual adminstration
  • Oral reading of questions in English (except the reading test)
  • Use of bilingual lists and dictionaries (Rivera,Stansfield, Scialdones, & Sharkey, 2000)
