Nature vs Nurture

I don’t have a real reason why I name is blog post nature versus nurture except that it’s been on my mind lately. The nature vs. nature debate centers around aspects of behavior are they inherited (i.e., genetic) or acquired (i.e., learned).

Nature is pre-wiring and influenced by genetic inheritance and other biological factors. Nurture is the influence of external factors, e.g., environment, culture, experience, and training.

I don’t believe people I born bigots however I can’t say that at birth the human mind is a tabula rasa (a blank slate) either. This has been on my mind lately not only because of the current state of our world everyone on edge; Trump’s campaign seems to bring out the worst in everyone. But the blatant racism that I’ve been receiving teaching and a majority white school has saddened me in these be questioning if we have really matured much as a civilization and is it biological or are these students products of their environment.

Thoughts: nature comes into play because hatred, racism, sexism is taught, passed down by generations. However, some things are genetic such as addiction, bipolar and depression although, those illness are not entirely genetic. That may contribute to a feeling of hatred, racism, etc. Therefore, in the schema, nature, and nurture I would have to say both contribute to the makeup of the human behavior whether good or bad.

The ache for home lives in all of us. The safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned.” ~ Maya Angelou
